Class Memories From 1965

I remember being a better proof reader in my WMHS days than I must be now. I looked over what I put on under "memories" last night and noticed that I even misspelled the abbreviation for WMHS. Somewhere else I put "an" instead of "a." I like to tell people that I have three degrees in English so I can act like I can't read or write. Actually, a basic factor is using a cranky computer. I still miss the old Smith Corona.

"Prank" is all this saga fits, but it really was not a prank. On Awards Day I was supposed to give Mr. Braley , who was then principal, a check from the senior class. (I was class treasurer.) The teacher who was supposed to give me the check stayed home sick and didn't even send the check. There was no time to discuss the problem, Before I knew it, we were in the auditorium. Soon I was on stage, supposed to give Mr. Braley the check. I guess I knew the show had to go on; I just folded a piece of paper and gave it to him. He thought the check was inside the paper. I went back to my seat, and he opened the paper when he got off stage. I understand that he nearly had a heart attack when there was no check.

I remember making a speech to the senior class when I ran for class treasurer. My mother was in the habit of "reviewing" such things. I let her, but when I got to school, I made the speech just as hokey as I wanted. It was all sincere--even my hokey ending, that I had no qualification except that "I love this school more than words can say." I still remember the applause. It wasn't just about applause though. It was about the students. They knew I valued them because, the night before, I had phoned each one--except for my two opponents--and asked for a vote. They would soon see that I would greet them just as warmly AFTER the election. I guess I was a Louisiana populist.

It was my senior year when I embraced the name "Pat." Nobody but banks, credit card companies, and the people showing this FMHS material have ever called me "Carolyn." (It was just stuck on my birth certificate because my mother yielded to an presumptuous nurse who wanted it there.) My pre-school name was Tricia. My strict elementary school made sure it was Patricia. Later classmates began saying Pat. It was when Earl Casey put "Pat Gardner, Editorial Editor" on the Rebel Dispatch that I embraced the name, as surely as I knew the writing was who I was.
